Running Loose upsets in Malowe Mem Cup
DESPITE the small fields on yesterday’s 10-race card at Caymanas Park, it was not a day for favourites all together as was demonstrated in at least three races, including the two trophy events.
First it was the 7-2 shot Running Loose who decimated a seven-horse field to win the $516,000 Valbert Malowe Memorial Cup feature and then Full Spectrum a 16-1 chance came away from the gates cleanly in his third attempt to beat the even money favourite Brotherly Love in the $492,000 Sports Journalist Of Jamaica Trophy supporting feature by a similar margin.
However, it was Wild Glitz who earlier turned up the books with a clinical 2 1/2 lengths victory as a 68-1 betting option in a $715,000 Overnight Allowance for three-year-olds and upwards over 1,600 metres.
Trained by Vin Edwards and part owned with his wife, Monica Wild Glitz, carrying a mere 45.5kg and lightweight claiming apprentice Richard Cole, covered the distance in a smart 1:39.4 to beat the 7-2 chance Reggae Rock in the nine-horse field.
It was the seven-year-old chestnut gelding’s second win from eight starts for the season and earned $390,400 as the winner’s share for earnings of $2,627,750 lifetime
In the very next race the day’s principal Valbert Marlowe feature Cole was at work again as he brought Running Loose from last to first with a scorching between horses to land the gamble ahead of the 3-1 bet Guan Yu ridden by top claiming apprentice Doushane Gordon.
Bred and owned by Morris Powell and Marshall Russell and trained by Powell, Running Loose failed to go the earlies but with the light weight closed rapidly after turning for home and not finding racing room along the rails which she thoroughly enjoys was switched by her rider to find room just off the rails between the leading pair of Guan Yu and leader Esquire.
The filly then took the lead entering the final 200 metres to come away for her first win for the season in the six-horse Restricted Allowance 111 company native-bred four-year-olds and upward (NW3). She ran 1,800 metres in a time of 1:52.4.
Patara the 3-2 second favourite was third 1 1/4 back while the 7-5 favourite Esquire who struggled out of the gates but recovered under Omar Walker soon after to lead held on to closed the frame.
Running Loose a four-year-old chestnut filly by Footloose 11 out of Tawnee Princess (Royal Minister). It was her third win from 33 career starts and she earned $282,050 as the winner’s share for earnings of $1,052,550 lifetime.
