J’can discus thrower eyes big times
WITH yet another national title under his belt, Jason ‘Dadz’ Morgan has his eyes set on international competition later this summer.
The national senior record-holder in the discus throw (62.95m) is enjoying one of his best seasons over the last three years and has thrown over 60 metres twice so far, with a season best of 60.95 achieved on April 24 in Monroe, Louisiana.
While trying to stay upright on a throwing circle made slippery by heavy rains earlier in the day, Morgan retained his title at the Supreme Ventures JAAA National Senior Trials on Sunday at the National Stadium with a best throw of 57.86m, but said he was alright with the effort.
“Today was kinda cool, not what I was expecting at all. I was kinda afraid of the ring as it rained earlier and so it was slippery and I was being very cautious. For half of the competition my focus was staying in the ring and not injuring myself,” he said.
With just nine throwers entered, including five juniors and decathlete Maurice Smith, the competition moved quickly but Morgan told the Observer the distance he got was alright. “Throwing here in Jamaica, it is a decent result and now I am looking forward to bigger and better competition,” he added.
The results from the National Trials, he said, showed him where he wants to be, and after the competition he was headed back to his Louisiana base where he would continue his preparation.
“I will go back to training now and will take part in one or two competitions before the Central American and Caribbean Games” — to be held in Puerto Rico later this month.
Morgan had earlier stated that he was also eyeing a spot on the team to the Commonwealth Games to be held in India in October.
