Lions remain on top after roaring past Warriors
DEFENDING champions Manchester Lions remain on top of the Jamaican Super Cricket League, with just one round of matches remaining in this year’s competition, after defeating St Elizabeth Warriors at the ALPART Sports Club on Sunday.
Manchester won by 10 wickets over the weekend after a strong bowling performance to stay one point ahead of St Catherine Saints.
After being bowled out for 202 on Saturday, the visitors returned the following day to skittle out St Elizabeth for a modest 59 with Stephon Patterson taking four wickets for 27 runs, while Jamie Merchant grabbed three
for seven.
The follow-on was enforced by Manchester and despite respective scores of 47 and 45 by Davian Davidson and Tyrone Vassell, St Mary managed just 149, as David Powell starred with six wickets for 30 runs. Donovan Sinclair chipped in with three for 39.
The Lions reached seven without loss to secure
full points.
St Catherine stayed in contention for the title after defeating St Ann Cutters by 10 wickets at the Port Rhoades Sports Club in Discovery Bay.
After dismantling St Ann for 77 and making 178 of their own on Saturday, the Saints again tore apart the home team batting — this time for 118 all out. Late order batsman Ricardo Dacres topscored with 28 against wily spinners Odean Brown (five for 31) and Bevon Brown (five for 68). The latter finished with nine for 76 in the match.
The Saints reached 21 without loss to seal the win.
At Sabina Park, Kingston Tigers and Westmoreland shared one point each after the home team scrambled to 140 for seven in their first innings reply when the match was called off.
Westmoreland had been dismissed for 176 early on Sunday after play was severely affected by rain on Saturday’s first day.
Westmoreland are sixth on 10 points, while Kingston, who had lost a total of seven points for using an ineligible player, are in seventh place on seven points. Neither
team has a chance to win
the League.
The match between Melbourne Kangaroos and home team Trelawny Buccaneers did not take place and a subsequent investigation will be done by the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Competitions and Complaints Committee to rule on the matter.
The Observer has been reliably informed that the Melbourne Cricket Club have complained of not being given sufficient notice of a change of venue from the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium to the Jarrett Park ground in
St James.
Melbourne have 17 points from five games, while Trelawny are rooted to the bottom on one point.
