USAIN Bolt won the hundred metres at the Lausanne Diamond League meet in Switzerland today in a world leading and meet record 9.82 seconds, despite not looking his comfortable best as he returns from a six-week injury layoff. The time was also a meet record.

Compatriot Yohan Blake finished second in 9.96 seconds. Fellow Jamaican Ainsley Waugh finished fourth in 10.22 seconds. Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles finished third in 10.16 seconds.

Absent were Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay, Bolt’s strongest rivals. Powell has also clocked 9.82 seconds this year, in Rome on June 10.

Bolt decided to run the 100 instead of the 200 to avoid aggravating the Achilles tendon problem that has kept him out of competition since he won the 300 metres at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on May 27.

“The doctor said to me I should actually try to avoid running the curves,” he said before the race.

The 100 and 200 world record holder said he was still “in decent shape” despite the injury, but cautioned against a fast time.

“My aim is to finish the race injury-free,” he said.

He is expected to race Powell in Paris next week. Meantime Gay has only just returned from a hamstring injury in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday.
