Golden double!
JASON Morgan and Kimberley Williams claimed Jamaica’s second and third gold medals in the field to bring the country’s tally to 27 at press time on yesterday’s 10th day of the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
Morgan threw 59.43 metres in the men’s discus, more than four metres better than second-placed finisher Jesus Parejo of Venezuela, who threw 54.88m.
O’Dayne Thompson was just out of the medals, finishing fourth with a throw of 54.10m
Williams leaped a personal best 14.23 metres to claim the top spot in the women’s triple jump ahead of Colombia’s Caterine Ibarguen with 14.10m.
In basketball, the men were just edged 79-77 by Mexico in a tight game with quarterly scores of 14-14, 25-27, 16-15, and 24-21. It was their second loss after being crushed 104-71 by Puerto Rico on Monday.
Meanwhile, the men’s hockey team was trounced 9-0 by Mexico in the latest encounter, ending with one win, a draw and two losses.
It was another bad day for Jamaicans in table tennis as Yvonne Foster, Kristen McKenzie, and Ashli Alexander lost all their women’s singles games matches.
In men’s singles, Henry Mujica of Venezuela beat Peter Moo Young, 3-1; Juan Henriquez of El Salvador edged Simon Tomlinson, 3-2; Joseph Dibbs was blanked by Alexander Echavarria, 3-0, and Luis Diaz beat Kareem Flowers, 3-0.
The Jamaicans had added a seventh gold on Monday’s day nine, securing a one-three finish in the women’s heptathlon as Peaches Roach captured gold with 5,780 points, while Tammilee Kerr earned bronze with 5,345.
The two were separated by Francia Manzanillo of the Dominican Republic, who recorded 5,561 points.
Zara Northover claimed silver in the shot put with a personal best of 17.04m as Cleopatra Borrel-Brown of Trinidad and Tobago secured gold with a throw of 18.46.
Nadia Alexander’s throw of 15.18 was only good enough for sixth.
Allodin Fothergill added another bronze medal to the tally after finishing third in the men’s 400m in a personal best 45.24 seconds.
The event was won by Costa Rica’s Nery Brenes, also in a personal best 44.84.
Clora Williams just missed out on a medal in the women’s equivalent after clocking 53.04 seconds in the event won in a season’s best 52.16 by the Bahamas’ Christine Amertil.
Shawn Pitter finished fifth in the men’s 1500m in a time of 3:49.65 in the event won Juan Luis Barrios of Mexico’s in 3:44.85.
Elsewhere, Phillip Bowes was beaten 13:4 by his Mexican opponent Juan Pablo Romero in the quarter-finals of the 64 kilogram light-welterweight boxing, while Jovan Young got a walkover Haiti’s Sony Arnaud in the 75kg middleweight division.
