Nothing Short of an ‘Epifany’
Epiphany n. any moment of great or sudden revelation. (World English Dictionary)
It was certainly a revelation for Marie Muschamp-Cooper, who shortly after surviving breast cancer found solace in stringing together semi-precious gemstones to create jewellery — a collection that she would call ‘Epifany’. “It gave me joy to make the jewellery; making [the jewellery] was like a healing. I connected with the gems and they gave me peace.”
Born in Mandeville to a Jamaican mother and Belizean father, the former television programmer-cum-graphic artist-cum-jewellery designer takes pride in hand picking each stone, in particular the natural stones such as coral and fresh water pearls. Now in its sixth year, Epifany Jewelry has a new collection called Jamaica Mar-Love — celebrating what Cooper calls Emancipendence – the mélange of Jamaica’s Emancipation and Independence.
For this collection the designer incorporates bold colours, including those of the Jamaican flag, as well as the traditional colours of the Rastafari, wanting to produce something that Jamaicans would love, and feel would reconnect them to their roots.
The one-of-a-kind pieces she says “… are for that person who’s not afraid to make a statement. I do tend to be a little ‘loud’, and without intending to I make a lot of statement pieces.”
