J’can drivers set for regional racing series
JAMAICA’S team of race drivers comprising David Summerbell Jnr, Doug Gore,Peter Rae and Halquin Rodney is scheduled to leave for Barbados today to compete in the second leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship series at Bushy Park race track.
The Jamaicans drivers will have their hands full, in that they will have to contend with 10 of the best Caribbean drivers — five from Guyana and five from Barbados.
The lone motor cyclist will face the might of the Guyanese riders.
The CMRC points standing after the first leg in Jamaica reflects that Summerbell leads with 30 points in the four-wheel drive class and Peter Rae 26 in the two-wheel category.
In the Country Championship, Guyana lead with 64 points to Jamaica’s 56 and Barbados’ 16
President of the JRDC and team manager Hilary Jardine strongly believes Jamaica will do well in the Drivers’ Championship races but will have a difficult time out-classing Guyana for the Country title as Guyana have five cars to Jamaica’s three. Barbados also have five cars.
“I’m confident of winning the drivers’ title because on our last outing on the small and narrow Bushy Park track, David (Summberbell) experienced handling problems.
“On this occasion he’s better prepared in that a new suspension has been fitted to the TA1. Doug (Gore), who is no stranger to the track, should perform as well as he did in 2007 when he won the CMRC title,” Jardine added.
Of the three Jamaican drivers, Peter Rae will face a larger field in the two-wheel drive class. He will racinge against the Barbadian pair of Mark Maloney and Stuart Williams, as well as the Guyanese quartet of Andrew King, Mark Vieira, Paul Vieira and Shawn King.
The team returns to Jamaica next Tuesday following a presentation function on Monday night.
