St Andrew into Challenge Cup U-15 final
ST Andrew defeated St Catherine 1-0 at Duhaney Park on Wednesday on Jevaughn Atkinson’s 75th-minute strike to book their place in the final of the JFF Under-15 Challenge Cup competition with a 5-1 aggregate victory.
St Andrew defeated their opponents 4-1 in the first leg at the Prison Oval, but despite both teams creating a number of chances, Atkinson’s goal was the only thing to separate the sides in the second leg.
The other semi-final game between Kingston and Clarendon at the Collie Smith Complex was not played as both teams showed up in white jerseys. That game was scheduled to be played yesterday at the same venue.
Clarendon’s coach Garfield Robinson insisted they had no idea the Kingston team wore the same home kit as they did.
He said when the teams met earlier in the season in Clarendon, Kingston wore red, “so we didn’t have any problems,” he told the Observer.
However, he argued that they do not have another set of gear and so had to adhere to the match officials’ ruling that the game be called off.
Clarendon won the first-leg 2-0, but if a disciplinary ruling had gone against them, Kingston would have edge them out by a 3-2 margin for a place in the final.
In the Under-13 competition, Kingston defeated Clarendon for a place in the final. Jaheel Hyde — the son of renowned former player and coach Lenworth Hyde — scored in the 44th minute at Mountain View Oval, which left the teams tied 1-1 on aggregate at the final whistle.
However, the Corporate Area side defeated their opponents 4-1 on penalty kicks to book their spot in the title decider.
The other semi-final match between St Andrew and Westmoreland at Duhaney Park was not played as the home team turned up late for the contest.
But after winning the first-leg 2-0, Westmoreland are expected to be awarded the match and a place in the final.
Both finals are set for tomorrow at the Prison Oval, with the under-13 game sheduled for 1:00 pm and the under-15s for 3:00 pm.
