Holmwood ‘A’ into Senior League semi-final
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Holmwood ‘A’ defeated Denbigh ‘A’ 33-22 to book the last semi-final spot in the Clarendon/Juici Patties Senior Netball League last Sunday at the Mineral Heights Courts.
The all-island schoolgirl champions joined early qualifiers Mico University College, Jamalco and Windalco in the last four.
Lead by game-high 28 points from national youth representative Deneen Taylor, Holmwood ‘A’ established an eight-point lead (19-11) at half-time following an 8-5 first quarter win.
Denbigh ‘A’, for whom Crishena Copeland shot 18 from 25, rallied to tie the third period (6-6), but could find no answer to the constructive play of the Christiana-based Holmwood, who stretched their lead to 11 with a 8-5 final quarter triumph.
The major talking point of the day, however, came from the top-of-the-table clash when newcomers Mico downed defending champions Jamalco 49-47.
At half-time, both teams were almost on equal terms with Mico being two points ahead, 22-20.
The University girls upped the tempo in the third quarter, thrashing Jamalco 16-9, before going down 11-18 in the final stanza.
Sharna Cardice was Mico’s top shooter with 40 from 46 tries, while veteran shooter Elaine Davis sunk 38 from 42 for the Winston Nevers-coached Jamalco.
In the day’s other game, Windalco whipped Holmwood ‘B’ 45-28 after quarterly scores of 16-8, 6-8, 13-2 and 10-10.
Windalco’s charge was led by Viola Francis-Cummings (39 from 43), while the talented Nicole Dickson hit 20 from 25 for Holmwood ‘B’.
Sunday’s semi-final line-up will pit preliminary champions Mico against fourth-placed Holmwood ‘A’ with Super League giants Jamalco and Windalco going head to head in the other.
In the Junior League semis, table toppers Longville Park will take on fourth-placed Glenmuir High, while in the other game Ricam and Toll Gate will do battle.
Last Sunday, Longville thrashed Gravel Hill, 33-7; Toll Gate topped Denbigh ‘B’, 20-10, while Ricam creamed Foga Road High, 24-4, and then return to beat Humble Lion, 22-19, in a rescheduled game.
