City pay the penalty
EPL: Sunderland inflicted big-spending Manchester City’s first defeat of the season as Darren Bent’s injury-time penalty earned them a 1-0 win at the Stadium of light.
The Citizens were made to pay for some poor finishing as Argentine Carlos Tevez fired high over an open goal after being played in by Yaya Toure. Wigan avenged their last season riot at the hands of Tottenham by stunning them 1-0 at White Hart Lane. Hugo Rodallega fired under Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini to give Wigan there first win of the season and incidentally their first goal as well.
Arsenal secured an impressive 2-1 win over tough opponents Blackburn with Walcott again on the score-sheet. Wayne Rooney finally ended his goal drought with a penalty as United brushed aside West Ham 3-0. The loss was West Ham’s third in a row at the same score line.
Chelsea didn’t rain goals, but produced an efficient display to dispatch Stoke City 2-0 with Malouda and Drogba getting on the score-sheet. Blackpool drew 2-2 with Fulham on their Premier League home debut. Andy Carroll found the net once more as Newcastle drew 1-1 with Wolves.
Fernando Torres got his season on the way as he scored Liverpool’s only goal in their 1-0 victory over West Brom. Aston Villa continued Everton’s poor start of the season as they defeated them 1-0 and Bolton rallied from two goals down and a man short to draw 2-2 with Birmingham.
Villa off the mark
La Liga: David Villa marked his league debut for Barcelona with a goal as the Catalans began the defence of their title with a comfortable 3-0 win over Racing Santander. Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi got the other goals.
Jose Mourinho failed to get off to a winning start as Real Madrid as his side was held to a goalless draw against Mallorca. Valencia hit the ground running with an easy 3-1 win over Malaga with veteran winger Joaquin netting a brace.
Sevilla were also able to pick up maximum points as they thrashed Levante 4-1 after coming from behind. Abdoulay Konko netted twice along with Renato and Negredo for Sevilla.
David Trezequet’s side, Hercules, went down 1-0 to Bilbao in their first fixture back in the Liga. Dani Osvaldo struck a brace as Espanyol eased pass Getafe 3-1 and Xabi Prieto’s second-half strike earned Real Sociedad a 1-0 win over Villarreal upon their top-flight return. Deportivo and Zaragoza played to a tame 0-0 draw as did Osasuna and Almeria.
Poor Juve
Serie A: A new-look Juventus side took on Bari in their Serie A opener, but it was they same old song singing as they went down 1-0 to the Southern Italian side. New coach Luigi Del Neri bemoaned his side’s lack of attacking courage and no doubt questions will begin to be raised over what to expect from this team.
Title challengers Roma dropped points as they were held to a goalless draw with newly promoted Cesena. Alexandre Pato fired in a brace as Milan hammered Lecce 4-0. Sampdoria shrugged off their Champions League disappointment to easily beat Lazio 2-0. Fiorentina and Napoli played out to a 1-1 draw with both sides reduced to 10 men.
Parma defeated newly promoted Brescia 2-0, while Palermo and Cagliari played to a goalless draw. Sergio Pellisier slotted home the winner from the penalty spot as Chievo edged Catania 2-1. A Giandomenico Mesto strike nine minutes before time gave Genoa a 1-0 victory over Udinese.
Sensational comeback
Bundesliga: Mainz staged a scintillating comeback or Wolfsburg threw away a three-goal lead, but in either even an exciting game ended with an unexpected victor as Mainz won 4-3.
Hamburg brushed aside Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 with Hoffenheim narrowly winning 1-0 over St Pauli. Schalke miserable start to the season continued as they were defeated 2-1 by Hannover. Werder Bremen bounced back from last week’s defeat to beat Cologne 4-2. Freiburg came from behind to beat Nurnberg 2-1.
A stunning performance produced by Borussia Monchengladbach crushed Bayer Leverkusen 6-3 at home. Teenager Patrick Herrmann impressed with a brace for Gladbach. Borussia Dortmund picked up their first win of the campaign by dispatching Stuttgart 3-1.
