Volleyball boss bats for youth at World Congress
PRESIDENT of the Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA), Major Warrenton Wilson, will devote his attention to youth development when the two-day 32nd FIVB World Congress gets underway today at the Rome Marriott Park Hotel, in Italy.
The FIVB World Congress, the supreme governing body for volleyball, is held every two years and covers travel expenses and accommodation for the first delegate of each category 1 and category 2 national federations.
FIVB president Jizhong Wei of China stated that the world congress “is the most efficient platform where the entire volleyball family can congregate and exchange ideas and be fully updated on the happenings in the world of volleyball”.
With this mind, Major Wilson said “my agenda therefore is to influence focus on Jamaica… in accordance with the submission I have already made to the FIVB Development Fund for assistance with our youth development programme”.
The local volleyball boss will also have “semi-formal and informal discussions regarding contracts/exchanges for our players and officials and scholarships for our children”.
“…Be assured that I will be seeking all opportunity to push the interest of JaVA wherever possible,” he emphasised.
A one-day workshop was held yesterday “providing the opportunity for federations to discuss issues with FIVB and Confederation officials while also providing a platform for the FIVB to update the federations on key developments within the organisation”.
Jamaica is a member of the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA), which represents 35 countries and is answerable to FIVB (International Volleyball Federation).
