Munroe looking to South Africa for experience
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — West Indies’ latest fast bowling recruit Subrina Munroe says she will use the upcoming tour of South Africa as an opportunity to gain valuable international experience.
The 25-year-old Munroe was one of two new faces in the West Indies women’s 14-member side announced earlier this month for the ICC’s Women’s Challenge tournament starting next month.
She has been going through her paces in the camp that started here last week under coach Sherwin Campbell and said it was critical for her to learn as much as possible.
“It’s all new to me, but I’m trying to soak up as much as possible in the time we have here at the camp before we go to South Africa,” said Munroe, who along with Pearl Etienne were included for the trip.
“I’m just trying my best to learn whatever I can and use it as experience when I go on tour. Having never played at the highest level before I have no idea what to expect, so my major aim at this stage is to listen to the coach and my team-mates and take advice from them.”
Having forced her way into the team after strong performances in the WICB tournament recently, she is now expected to share the new ball with Shakera Selman in the October 6-16 tournament.
One of the fittest players in the squad, Munroe has also represented Guyana in volleyball and the CARIFTA Games and said she was now thrilled to be playing at the highest level.
“When I first heard I was selected I said ‘the hard work has paid off’. Everything takes work and you don’t get to the top overnight … this is a stepping stone for me and the tour to South Africa is another step up the ladder,” Munroe said.
“It is a privilege and an honour to represent the West Indies and this is like a dream to wear West Indies colours. The dream continues in South Africa and you can be sure I will give it my all.”
West Indies will clash with hosts South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Ireland and the Netherlands in the tournament comprising One-Day and Twenty20 matches.
