Mr Blair for Jockey Club Stakes
TEN will go postward in what appears to be a tough call in the $765,000 Jockey Club Stakes feature at Caymanas Park today at 4:45 pm.
The feature will also be well supported by several other interestingly composed events on the 10-race card that include the Alex’s Imports “Dig Out Handicap” Race #32 over 1,200 metres and a Restricted Stakes race for imported three-year-olds upward (NW3 and maidens) and native-bred three-year-olds also over 1,200 metres where the importeds Sir Von and Blackie Davis, along with locally-bred Herroyalhighness, will compete.
The Jockey Club Stakes is an Overnight Allowance event for native-bred three-year-olds and upward that has attracted a closely-match field of in-form runners who will contest 1,400 metres. It is a distance that each of the runners will thoroughly enjoy and with the major share of $417,650 up for grabs it gives the event that razor-sharp edge to make it a very competitive affair.
The Noel Ennevor-prepared Mr Blair, who opened his winning account for the season with a blazing run over 1,000 metres straight in 58.3 seconds, must be among the leading contenders for top honours. He returns here up in grade, but with the exception of Reggae Rock and Patara, only Burning Cielo, Medical Report and Naval Commander among his real danger have visited the winner’s enclosure for the season.
Major Mayer, who would have cleaned up this field two seasons ago without raising a sweat, has shown only moderate form from his two runs this season, while Undaunted, who had a fantastic three-year-old season last year is now making his four-year-old debut.
Prince Of Peace, another whose three-year-old season was productive, has not been able to reproduce that type form as a four-year-old from five runs.
Nonetheless, that does not say much, as when the right time comes non-winners become winners as like Mr Blair they are all here for one single purpose to win and it will all boil to down to a case of survival of the fittest.
For those who have already won we know what to expect. It is the Major Mayers and the Undaunteds who will cause most anxious moments.
Major Mayer, the mount of Richard Mitchell, looks to be edging back to his natural self and could give an improved performance.
But Undaunted, who ended his 2009 season in October of last year by finishing ahead of Saint Cecelia over 1,600 metres yet 2 1/4 lengths behind Regal Selecion, looks to be in robust shape for a winning return.
He left us in good shape eight days shy of one year of his return and judging from his preparation will do so in impressive condition and should this be reproduced in the actual event, then he should make a winning four-year-old return.
Undaunted, a bay colt by Spacelink out of Chinua (St Attitude) owned by Stephen Nariesingh and trained by Anthony Nunes is a gifted front runner and with the trainer calling for Shane Ellis this could spell disaster for his rivals.
But with Aaron Chatrie still aboard Mr Blair, who packs a good turn off foot during the closing stages of an event, could still get the better of the exchanges at the business end.
