Major Lazer the duo who produced the mega hit Paper Planes by MIA are in Jamaica for a week recording a new album.

They will record for 10 days at the Portland-based Geejam studio according to Geejam head Jon Baker in a Sunday Observer interview this week.

“They are an electronica outfit but they use a lot of dancehall artistes so a lot of Jamaican artistes will be guest on the production,” stated Baker whose studio already had visits by Drake, Santigold and Amy Winehouse this year.

It’s not the first time the duo will record in Jamaica, last year they recorded their debut album at Tuff Gong studio in Kingston. The album, Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do, was released on Downtown Records featuring Santigold, Vybz Kartel, Busy Signal, Ward 21, Nina Sky, Mr Vegas, Turbulence, Mapei, TOK, Prince Zimboo, Leftside and others.

Paper Planes was co-produced by Diplo and Switch prior to forming Major Lazer. The song peaked in many markets including number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2008. The song received a second life when it was sampled by Rap stars TI and Jay-Z and renamed Swagga like Us which peaked at number five on Billboard Hot 100.

Geejam studio is part of the Geejam group which includes a production media company, studio and villas located on eight acres. Geejam is also responsible for the international success of Portland mento band, The Jolly Boys, who are having a great run on charts especially in Europe.
