Los Perfectos, Barbican in first leg final of Women’s League
After failing in two finals already this season, newcomers Los Perfectos of Manchester will try to make it third time lucky when they face off with defending champion Barbican in the first-leg of their two-way Sherwin Williams Women’s League football final at Brooks Park today. Game time is 3:00 pm.
The Merron Gordon-coached girls have been the revelation of the league this season, and despite contesting two finals, they still have nothing to show and are expected to give their all in the effort to take home the top prize.
However, Barbican coach Charles Edwards anticipates a strong push from Los Perfectos, but believes his team has the measure on their opponents.
“Los Perfectos has been to all three finals and they haven’t won any, so I’m pretty sure that they will be very hungry and will be trying to get some silverware before the end of the season, so we have to be prepared for that,” he said.
Barbican lost their opening match to the Manchester team, but Edwards’ team drew with them afterwards, before beating them for the knockout title in their last meeting.
And he thinks his team has the calibre to continue beating this team.
“As the season progressed and the more we played them, the more we get a feel for them and know how to perform better against them and beat them, so we will go into this game confident,” he said.
Edwards said Los Perfectos have an organised defence that knows how to sit behind the ball and that could create problems for his team.
“But we have already gone through training and looked at what to do in order to beat them… and at this time of the season Barbican are usually at their best, so we will be ready for this game,” he noted.
Los Perfectos coach Gordon admitted that losing two finals has been heart-breaking, but note that his girls have gained a lot of experience during the season.
“We will be playing at home and we want to give it our best shot and start off the first leg with a win,” he said.
“But it is always a tight game with Barbican as they are a very experienced team, but our young girls are very hungry for this title and we intend to give our best,” he continued.
