Benjamin’s ‘fiver’ sends BVI packing
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (CMC) — Kurlson Benjamin’s five-goal effort underlined Dominica’s 10-0 annihilation of the British Virgin Islands in their Digicel Caribbean Cup first-round encounter on Friday evening.
The 25-year-old forward was on fire in the second half as he capped off a strong Dominica performance in Group D of the tournament at the Panamericano Stadium.
For BVI, it was their second successive crushing after they lost 0-17 to hosts Dominican Republic on Thursday.
Dominica were on target after just 26 seconds when Mitchel Joseph scored the first of his three goals, following up with efforts in the 11th and 13th minutes.
Ahead 3-0 at half-time, Benjamin staged his show on resumption, scoring in the 48th, 71st, 81st, 84th, 85th minutes to pour misery on BVI.
Amidst the fireworks, Chad Bertrand netted in the 55th minute and Donald Javier three minutes from time to get their names on the scoresheet as well.
Dominica were scheduled to face the Dominican Republic yesterday evening, with the winner advancing to Group G with Cuba, Antigua and one of the second placed teams from the first round.
