Whew! Observer we thought you’d lost it!
Dear Editor:
In my household the Observer is our preferred choice of newspapers and even our teenage children find it interesting. But I have to admit that our faith in the paper was badly shaken after we read your Observer West story with the headline To hell and back on October 28, 2010. Let me share the comments of various members of my family with you:
My wife: “Oh God, I hope this never happens to us. I really expected much better of the Observer.”
My eldest son (18): “I don’t think I would be able to face my schoolmates.”
My daughter (16): “Me worse. But this can’t be the Observer!”
As you can imagine, we were very relieved when we saw your explanation the following day, that such articles were beneath you and should never have been published. It doesn’t matter that it was based on an interview with the unfortunate man.
Whew! For a moment Observer we thought you’d lost it.
