Marley to inspire young golfers
LEIZA Munn Blakely presented the Vitoria Marley Memorial Trophies to Kai Harris and Jordan Lowe, respective girls and boys junior winners in the Alliance Buccaneer Memorial Golf Tournament, last weekend at Caymanas Golf Club. The presentation took place at the Constant Spring Golf Club.
Blakely, mother of Marley who died earlier this year, also played in the tournament. She presented Marley’s green jacket bedecked with all her pins from the tournament she had competed in, to Frank Jackson, the captain of Constant Spring Golf Club.
An emotional Blakely said afterwards, “When I was told the Buccaneers decided to honour Isabell with inaugurating the trophies in her name, I was very happy.
“I decided to present her decorated green jacket to Constant Spring so that the young golfers would be inspired by her. She started here at Constant Spring, so it was the natural thing to do.”
Johnathan Newnham (153), who won the event for the first time, ahead of two-time defending champion Fabian Campbell (157), said he would miss Vitoria, but would be okay as he knew she would always be around. Newnham also won the ‘Closest to the Pin’ trophy. Jodi Munn Barrow (157) took the Ladies Section ahead of Maggi Lyn (158).
The Seniors category went to Greg Chong (156), while Tony Gooden (167) took the Super Seniors Section. Gooden also took the one-day Buccaneer Section with 57 points. The trophy for the female section went to Maggie Lyn, who got 51 points.
The event featured two different competitions which run concurrently: a two-day — 36-hole Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) qualifier, while the other which was played on Sunday was a modified Stableford competition in the form of a charity fundraiser for the Laws Street Trade Training Centre.
