Henry sweeps badminton titles at CBA tournament
AS the top seed in all of his three finals of the National Continental Foods Open at the Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA) badminton tournament held at its Old Hope Road headquarters Monday night, Gareth Henry delivered on each occasion.
He toiled to claim the Open men’s singles, overcoming Garron Palmer, 16-21, 21-17, 21-17. Henry and Palmer set their seal in the men’s doubles when they beat Dennis Coke and Anthony McNee, 21-14, 21-13.
Henry and his sister Geordine Henry outpointed Palmer and Mikaylia Haldane, 12-21, 21-19, 21-16, for the mixed doubles crown.
Meanwhile, national female champion Alya Lewis did a fine job in the Open women’s singles, beating rising star and last year’s national junior champion, 16-year-old Shana-Kay Bailey, 21-18, 21-19.
Haldane and Heidi Kaye Williams confirmed their number one ranking in the Open women’s doubles, downing Bailey and Sheinell Hyatt, 21-16, 21-14.
In the Premier Optical C Division, top seed Samantha Henry underlined her superiority when she captured both the singles and doubles trophies.
Samantha outplayed Diamond Cassanova, 17-21, 21-19, 21-16, in the singles final and with Daisy Hue clinched the doubles, beating Shameka Pink and Iesha Gordon, 21-14, 21-16.
Third seed Sean Wilson won the C men’s singles when he defeated fourth seed Jamari Rose, 21-12, 21-15, while Rose and Maurice McLaren outwitted top seed Kemar Valentine and Orane Burke, 21-13, 21-16, for the C men’s doubles title.
In the C mixed doubles final, Burke and Crystal Smith topped Wilson and D’Anna-Marie Edwards, 16-21, 21-13, 21-19.
