Belair take lead in Central Conference basketball
HAYES, Clarendon — Belair School are now leaders of both divisions in Zone A of the ISSA/KFC Central Conference schoolboy basketball competition after recording huge midweek victories over Clarendon oppositions.
The Michael Stephensoncoached teams on Tuesday copped the double over Glenmuir High, with the Under-16s winning 57-26 and the Under-19s triumphing 131-10 in Mandeville.
A day later, the senior team whipped Vere Technical, 77-22, in Hayes, Clarendon, to join Edwin Allen atop the standings on 12 points, but have a game in hand.
The juniors are, however, sole leaders in their category having leapfrogged previous front-runners deCartet College by a point (10).
They are now unbeaten in five games, and quite frankly, never looked like losing that record against Glenmuir as they cruised all the way, winning each quarter, 15-7, 12-4, 10-8, and 20-7, with Romario Veals netting 26 points.
In the senior match-up, three players shot double figures — Shelamr Bromfield (61), Taniel Reynolds (24) and Daniel Laing (18) — as Belair condemned Glenmuir to their sixth defeat.
On Tuesday, they got off to a slow start against Vere, but the win was never in doubt once they rallied to take the lead at 6-4.
They led 29-8 at the first break, 49-14 at half-time then ended the game as a contest with a 42-point lead (62-20) going into the final quarter.
Vere, who were suffering their fourth defeat in six games, will now look to rebound against fellow strugglers Clarendon College on Friday.
