Fever Builds!… Rusea’s face Lennon in daCosta Cup final
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Amassive turnout is expected for Saturday’s ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup final between eight-time winners Rusea’s High and first-time finalists Lennon High at Jarrett Park.
If last Saturday’s bumper crowd for the semi-finals between Rusea’s and St James High is any indication, space will be at a premium for the final which will start at 3:00 pm.
Rusea’s has managed to attract thousands of supporters as it gained momentum late in the season, while Lennon is expected to garner the support from the middle of the island.
The schools will be meeting for the second time this season after a 0-0 draw in the first round of the quarter-finals at Brooks Park just over two weeks ago.
The teams advanced to the finals after scoring 2-1 wins; Rusea’s came from behind to beat 2008 winners St James High at Jarrett Park while Lennon beat last year’s champions St Elizabeth Technical at Brancourt in Clarendon.
Rusea’s High will start as favourites to add their ninth lien on the title. It is their first time back in the final since 2002 when they won their last title.
Statistically, the Emerson Henry/Anthony Williamscoached Rusea’s has been the most impressive scoring the most goals since the start of the Inter-zone as well as conceding the least.
Rusea’s has scored 20 goals and conceded two compared to Lennon’s 12 goals scored and three allowed.
Rusea’s Brian Brown will need one goal to win the scoring race in the daCosta Cup as he is tied on nine goals with St James High’s Allan Ottey.
Ewan Grandison is Lennon’s topscorer with four goals while Odaine Brown and Justin Johnson are both on three each.
