Village’s Brazilian coach starts stint with defeat
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Benfica FC of St Ann continued to forge their way upwards in the point’s tables of the Digicel Premier League, coming from behind to beat Village United 2-1 in their second round game at Jarrett Park on Sunday, spoiling Brazillian Neider dos Santos’ introduction as the Village coach.
Craig Gordon scored twice in the second half to give Benfica back-to-back wins after Lance Laing had given the home team the lead in the first half.
The win pushed Benfica’s points tally to 24, tied with defending champions Harbour View in mid-table, while Village, who have won just once in the last five games, are in 10th place on 15 points — both from 16 games.
Benfica’s coach Conroy Brown said the win was as a result of the team sticking to the game plan even after going behind to an early goal.
“The half time talk was that they should stick to the game plan (and) go on the offence, stay high and don’t give Village any chance to settle and they stuck to the game plan and it paid off,” Brown said.
Dos Santos, who used to guide the Bahamas national teams, said they should have won the game and paid the price for several first half missed chances.
“We had at least four clear chances in the first half (to score), and if we had gone up three or four nil, that would have been the end of the story,” he said.
However, Laing shot Village into the lead after just 10 minutes when his curling left-footed free-kick from the right side beat Leighton Murray at his near post.
Benfica clawed their way back to level terms in the 59th minute when Gordon beat Hamilton from a melee.
He then made the points safe in the 86th minute when the Village defence caved in under pressure from the St Ann side and Gordon pounced on a cross from the left to power it past the Village goalkeeper.
