Portmore duo keeps eyes on Europe
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Portmore United’s duo of Eric Vernan and Rafe Wolfe are both eying moves back to Europe when the FIFA transfer window reopens in January.
Both players have been representing their local club Portmore United in the Digicel Premier League this season, but are hoping for the chance to return overseas next season.
The contracts of both players ran out at the end of the previous season, but both told the Observer recently following a DPL second-round draw against Village United at Jarrett Park, that all things being equal, they should be plying their trade overseas come next year, most likely in Sweden.
The 23-year-old Vernan, who played for Nybergsund in Norway the last one-and-half seasons, said he was made a contract extension offer but the club was going through some financial problems.
Vernan, a diminutive wide player, described his stay in Norway as “very good”, but added that he wanted to play at a higher level after experiencing the Norwegian First Division.
His handlers, he said, are now in negotiations with teams in Sweden and Denmark where the football is of a higher level.
Wolfe, who spent two years with the Hungarian club Ferencváros and helped them to promotion, also has his eyes on football in Sweden and said if all goes to plan, “I will be playing in Europe come January”.
While he said he had some success on the field in Hungary playing for the club that is part of the English club Sheffield United system, things off the field were not always smooth as he said the Hungarians did not warm up easily to foreigners.
