UWI beat Yes Fitness Centre 3-1 in Div 2 Club TT
THE University of the West Indies (UWI) defeated newcomers Yes Fitness Centre of Manchester 3-1 in a Division Two rescheduled match played recently at Manchester High School, as the JTTA National Table Tennis Club League continued.
After this result, points standings for the category still have both Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) and former many-time champions Pembroke Hall tied at the top on 12 points each. They are followed by UWI on eight points, and both Yes Fitness Centre and Highgate United on five points apiece. BOJ and Pembroke Hall each have one match remaining against each other; UWI and Yes Fitness Centre each have three matches left to play, while Highgate United have four matches remaining. The top four teams will advance to the semi-finals.
The League will culminate at the YMCA tomorrow when all play-offs will take place, to decide the season’s champions in all five categories. Play begins at 10:00 am.
In individual results, Robert Thaxter, who is originally from Mandeville, won two matches for UWI, against his former teammates. He crushed Samuel Ricketts 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-3) and Everette Kavanaugh 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-9) as Chevarlo Foster and Hubert Lawrence stopped Kavanaugh and Bert Welsh 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-9) in doubles, for UWI’s three victories.
Welsh overpowered Lawrence 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-7), to pull one back for Yes Fitness Centre.
