Trend Setter upsets in Phillips Memorial
JOCKEY Peter Bryan used a chance ride aboard Trend Setter to land the $516,600 Howard Phillips Memorial Cup feature with a 12-1 upset victory at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Called upon by trainer Anthony Nunes to replace first race winner Dane Nelson, Bryan guided the home-bred Cuds-owned roan filly to a two lengths win over the 4-5 second favourite Indy Queen and favourite Trial Lawyer in that order in the 1,100 metres contest among Restricted Allowance 1V native-bred four-year-olds upward (NW3) in a time of 1:07.4.
Stalking splits of 23.4, 47.4 for the first quarter, Trend Setter got a perfect run against the running rails turning for home and from an all-out drive gained the ascendancy inside the final 100 metres to come away for her first win of the 2011 season from her second start.
Bred and owned by Courtney Walsh, Trend Setter is by He’stherealthing out of Safe Landing (Gentleman Jinsky). It was the filly’s third win from 10 career starts and earned $282,050 as the winner’s share for earnings of $1,344,350 lifetime.
While Trend Setter created the upset of the programme, the Noel Ennevor-conditioned top Grade One campaigner Hombre got his 2011 campaign off to a winning start when he romped the $786,500 Open Allowance test, the most valuable race on the programme, by a widening seven lengths.
Hombre stalked the pace of the cheap speed Burning Cielo, took over leaving the 800-metre pole under Andre Martin and was never threatened in the stretch as he cantered his favourite 1,820 metres journey in a time of 1:55.4.
In-form imported four-year-old colt Burst of Energy, a 2-1 bet, finished heads on with six-year-old mare Heart Of Gold at odds of 5-1 for second money with Prime Minister completing the frame as a 6-1 chance.
Bred and owned by Wassell Burnett, Hombre, a six-year-old bay gelding by Pat N Jac out of Muchacha Favorita (Slick Trick), was winning for the 11th time and pocketed $429,400 as the winner’s share for earnings of $9,164,300 lifetime.
