Jamaican Hinds wins 10K women’s race
HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) — Korene Hinds became the second Jamaican winner at this year’s Bermuda International Race Weekend when she took the 10-kilometre women’s title, finishing sixth overall behind repeat Kenyan winner Shadrack Biwot.
Hinds, 34, who finished second in the race last year, completed the course on Saturday in 33 minutes and 56 seconds.
Her compatriot Kenia Sinclair, who won the elite women’s mile race on Friday night, was the second woman home and eighth overall in 34:27.
Panama’s Rolanda Hill, third in the mile, was third woman home and 16th overall in 38:24.
Hinds, who finished runner-up to Sinclair in the mile, said: “I didn’t go out with a real plan, I just went out to race from how I felt from last night and when I first came out this morning it was a bit cold, but it turned out to be a good day.
“My fellow country lady (Sinclair) and I worked together up until mile five and it felt pretty good. I started a bit tight but as the race wore on played it smart.
“I figured at about mile five I needed to start pushing it and see how it goes so I tested myself and it paid off in the end.
“We ran together pretty much the whole way and it was nice to have her there and we worked together so it was good for both of us.
“It’s great to be here and run with all the fans out there to cheer you on, the weather this year was perfect compared to the first.”
Biwot, third in the mile men’s race on Friday, dominated the 10K field, easily repeating his success of a year ago, clocking 30:28 minutes, 30 seconds clear of compatriot Phillip Lagat, surprise winner of the mile race, in 30:58. Ethiopian Kumsa Magersa was third in 30:59.
A triple winner here last year, Biwot went on to complete a double when he romped home in Sunday’s half marathon in one minute, 07.14 seconds. Magersa traded 10K places with Lagat, finishing second in 1:09.25, just five seconds ahead of Lagat.
“It feels great to win again,” said Biwot. “I’m a little disappointed about (the mile), but sometimes it goes like that, you win some you lose some.”
Tania Jones of Canada took the half marathon women’s honours, finishing in 1:28:53. Bermuda’s Deon Breary was a surprise second in 1:33.06.
American Luke Watson and Canadian Stephanie Hodge were respective winners of Sunday’s marathon.
Watson, second in Friday’s mile, completed the course in 2:22.48, more than three minutes ahead of the pre-race favourites, Ethiopian pair Teklu Tefera Deneke (2:26.07) and Darreje Hailegiorgis (2:28.51).
