Injured Sachin in final squad for World Cup
BANGALORE, India (CMC) — Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar is one four injured players named in India’s 15-man squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup starting next month across India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The 37-year-old right-hander, who will be contesting his fifth World Cup, suffered a hamstring injury during India’s second One-Day International with South Africa last Saturday and was forced to return home early.
Tendulkar is the leading run-scorer in world cricket, having amassed 17 629 runs from 444 matches.
Openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir have also been named in the squad despite being forced out of the tour of South Africa with injury prior to the start of the ODIs.
Fast bowler Praveen Kumar is also on the mend from an elbow injury but makes the squad. However, Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma and Shantha Sreesanth, all currently on the tour of South Africa have been overlooked.
“I am not worried at all about the injuries, these are part of the game. I am confident the team will be fully fit when the World Cup starts,” said chief selector Kris Srikkanth.
“It’s a very balanced team. This team will do the job well.”
The side, which will be led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, will contest the February 19 to April 2 tournament in Group B against West Indies, Bangladesh, England, Ireland, the Netherlands and South Africa.
