A touching Sigma Corporate Run
Dear Editor,
For some it was about the time – less than 20 minutes? Under an hour? For others it was being able to run 5k. For others it was simply about walking/running for babies.
For me it was an unforgettable smile that came to my seven-year-old daughter’s face when I told her she would need to be up at 6 am on a Sunday to “walk for babies”. The grin I elicited by repeating that line as we stood in the midst of thousands on Knutsford Boulevard and the warmth of the embrace I felt as we walked down Ruthven Road past the smiling “participating” homeless man (who, by the way, happily posed for a photograph by an eager fan) were wondrous.
Walking for babies, as I like to call it, was not only a lovely humanitarian gesture; it was a great opportunity to reflect, bond, observe and pledge to do more – more for oneself and for others.
Although children (under 10 years) are not allowed to compete officially in the Pan Caribbean Sigma Corporate Run, many do participate – on their bikes, in strollers, on parents’ shoulders or walking the entire “run”, as my daughter did. No doubt the children (and adults) bring their sense of adventure and take away the sights and scenes that they will remember for a long time. I congratulate the organisers for not only facilitating a worthy cause but for challenging the participants to give, and hopefully inspire.
