Respect all workers
Dear Editor,
I am astonished to note some of the practices that are continuously propagated in our wholesale stores downtown. I was heading home from work one evening when I decided to stop downtown to buy a few items. After going from wholesale to wholesale searching for a particular item, I came upon a wholesale that had the item which I sought.
After being told the price of the item by one of the clerks, I noticed that she was in the same area where I was waiting. I then asked who would be serving me. She answered, “Cyaan serve you yet, di lady gawn a baatroom.” It took a while for the comment to register.
I then realised that the owner of the establishment had locked out all clerks before retreating to the restroom. I felt that this treatment was unacceptable. I have heard in the past how some of these establishments provide little or no comfortable seating for breaks (rest) or suitable bathroom facilities for their employees. This goes to show that no matter how hard some people try, they are still being treated unfairly, even when our motto proclaims, “Out Of Many, One People”.
We as citizens should note that in spite of one’s home address or educational background, everyone should be treated fairly. Regardless of our occupation, respect should be meted out to all, that we all have a right to make an honest living without being victimised.
