Portsmouth boost Major League semi-final bid
SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine — Portsmouth and Spanish Town Police are two and three points, respectively, from securing semi-final berths in the LIME/St Catherine Major League following comfortable victories at the weekend.
Second-placed Portsmouth (35) strengthened their bid after two own goals gifted them a 2-0 win over fellow Portmore team Wanderers, while Ricardo Herrera’s second-half double helped third-placed Police (34) to a 3-0 triumph at Dunbeholden.
And with two games remaining in the regular season, both teams could seal their spots in the last four with victories in their next games.
Meanwhile, Royal Lakes (31) missed a chance to consolidate their fourth-placed status after giving up an extra-time equaliser to draw 2-2 with leaders Black Lion (42).
At McCook’s Pen, the hosts blanked relegated Cumberland 3-0 to leapfrog Wanderers (23) into sixth on 25 points.
In Division One, Waterford stayed in contention to cop the last semi-final spot following their 0-0 draw at Travelers.
With the point, the Portmore-based team joined Upfront on 18 points in fourth, but with an inferior goal difference.
In other results, Alton Brown bagged a hat-trick and Jevaune Benjamin notched a brace as leaders Frazsiers Whip hammered last-placed Invaders 9-0, while Christian Pen held on for a 2-1 win over Upfront.
