Myles top performer at Doubles Mania

Willroy Myles was the top performer at the Young’s Supermarket-sponsored Doubles Mania Badminton Tournament held over the weekend at the YMCA courts on Hope Road.

Myles first teamed with an older brother Albert to take the men’s doubles from the country’s top juniors Dennis Coke and Anthony McNee 21-17, 23-21, then pulled Barbara Johnson, a B Division lady, out of semi-retirement from tournament play to take the Open mixed doubles, defeating Joslyn Davis, another B player, and top female junior Mikaylia Haldane 23-21, 21-9.

Other double winners in the tournament were Hadei Kaye Williams, who won both the Open and B Division ladies doubles titles, and Sreyneang Phon, who captured her two D Division events.

Last year’s Open events double winners Garron Palmer and Alya Lewis did not make an appearance this time around. Palmer was not able to get the time off from work, while Lewis indicated that she is hanging up her racquet.

Of the other top locals, Gareth Henry left the island over the weekend for Malaysia on an extended training stint geared towards 2012 Olympic qualification and Olympian Nigella Saunders has not yet reached the level of fitness required for tournament play after her debilitating injury preceding last year’s CAC Games.

Several members of the national junior training squad were among the awardees. In addition to Coke, McNee and Haldane, these were Alana Bailey, Sue-Ann Berry, Vinroy Braham, Diamond Cassanova, Nichiesha Durrant, D’Anna-Marie Edwards, Demetri Francis, Glenroy Gayle, Rickelle Gayle, Jemarey Gordon, Esther Reynolds, Samuel Ricketts and Sean Wilson.

The performances of these juniors were particularly pleasing to the local association, as the Pan American Junior Badminton Championships are slated for Jamaica from July 24 to 31 this year.

At the awards ceremony which followed the final matches Vishu Tolan, managing director of Young’s Supermarket, handed out the major awards.

The complete results of this year’s (doubles only) tournament’s final matches were:
