Morgan continues good early show in discus
JAMAICA’S discus thrower Jason Morgan continued his impressive early-season showing after recording his second best throw of 62.01 metres at the Louisiana Classic at the University of Lafayette-Louisiana last Saturday.
The 28-year-old, who is preparing for the June National Trials, won the competition and told the Observer he had a “solid series with throws all over 60-61m”.
He follows closely on his 61.80m season’s opener done the previous week at the Cowboys Relays at McNeese State University also in Louisiana, which was his best season opener.
Morgan, who holds the national record of 62.95m set in 2007, is aiming to qualify for this summer’s IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.
The ‘A’ standard for the discus in Daegu is 65.0m and the Central American and Caribbean Games gold medallist told the Observer he was confident he would achive it before he came home for Trials.
Meanwhile, former St Elizabeth Technical athlete and junior national representative Rochelle Farquharson, who is now attending Mississippi State, won the long and triple jumps with 5.93m and 12.89, respectively.
Another Jamaican, former Wolmer’s Girls’ sprinter Keisha Wallace, won the 100m hurdles in 13.40 seconds, while Farquharson’s elder sister Racquel was third in 13.83 and also cleared 1.63m in the high jump.
IAAF World Junior Championships representative Jody-Ann Muir was part of the Mississippi State 4x100m team which was second in 45.20 seconds.
