Carifta Trials record qualifying standards for WYC
SEVERAL of the most outstanding performers at last weekend’s Carifta Games Trials have attained the qualifying standards for this summer’s IAAF World Youth Championships (WYC) set for July 6-10 in Lille, France.
While there were a number of impressive performances on the track, only Manchester High’s Chanice Porter and St Elizabeth Technical’s (STETHS) Opal James met qualifying standards in the field.
Porter cleared a personal best 1.85 metres to win the Under-20 girls long jump which is .10 metres over the qualifying mark (1.75m), while James leapt 12.42m to win the Under-17 girls triple jump, meeting the 12.20m minimum mark.
Seven of the eight finalists in the Under-17 girls’ 100m and seven in the boys’ 100m, ran faster than the respecrive 12.50 seconds and 11.25 seconds qualifying standard for the WYC.
Shauna Helps of Wolmer’s clocked 11.95 seconds to win ahead of The Queen’s School’s Shanice Bonner, who posted 11.98 and Glenmuir’s Ashley Stephens (12.23).
The boys’ standards were met by Raheem Robinson (10.90), Jevaughn Minzie (10.93), Gauwin Williams (10.96), Edward Clarke (11.04), Rohan Walker (11.05) and Zavian Williams (11.23).
Rosean Maxwell of Munro College clocked 54.39 seconds to win the Under-17 boys 400 metre hurdles, which is well below the 55.90 qualifying time. Wolmer’s Boys’ Javon Ashley (55.14) also made the qualifying standard.
Yanique McNeil of Vere (54.44), Kissi Ann Brown of Wolmer’s, and Genekee Lee of St Jago (55.76) were the most impressive athletes to go below the 57.60 seconds standard for the girls 400m, while on the boys’ side the qualifying mark of 50.00 has been attained by Khadeesh Willis of St Jago, who won the Under-17 boys title in 49.78 seconds and Keneil Harrison of Munro, who clocked 49.98.
Yanique Thompson of Holmwood, who won the girls’ Under-17 100m in 14.03, Peta Gaye Thompson of Camperdown with 14.10 seconds, and St Jago’s Tishana Monteith with 14.25 met the 14.60 seconds required for the event.
Only winner Tyler Mason of Jamaica College (14.12) and Calabar’s Michael O’Hara (14.41) went below the 14.45 seconds required to qualify for the boys 110m hurdles.
Rohan Walker’s impressive 22.00 seconds win in the Under-17 boys’ 200m is .58 seconds below the qualifying standard, while runner-up Jevaughn Minzie (22.01) of Bog Walk and Zavian Williams of Calabar 22.57 also qualified.
On the girls’ side, Wolmer’s Joneille Smith (24.42), Bonner (24.66), and Satina Chambers of Vere (24.82) were the top-three athletes below the 25.60 required to qualify for the WYC.
According to IAAF rules, only athletes aged 16 or 17 on December 31, that is, those born in 1994 or 1995 for this year’s WYC may compete. All performances must be done between January 1 and June 20 this year and must be achieved during an official competition organised in conformity with IAAF Rules.
