Two ‘big’ races highlight Easter Monday programme
TEN races, featuring two trophy events, will bring the two-day Easter racing carnival to a close at Caymanas Park today with the principal feature being the $1,188,000 Bonnie Blue Flag Trophy (Grade One).
Six Graded Stakes three-year-olds upward are entered in the 1,820-metre event.
The other trophy race on the programme is the $715,000 Easter Sprint Cup. Fourteen Overnight Allowance three-year-olds upward have been entered in the 1,100-metre dash.
In the Bonnie Blue Flag principal feature, Mark My Word, Elite Bloodstock Limited’s reigning Horse-Of-The-Year trained by Richard Azan who is also a part owner, is heavily favoured to get his four-year-old career off on a winning note the second time of asking. This is after being beaten into fourth place eight-and-half lengths adrift by the dashing imported filly Ronron over 1,400 metres on his seasonal debut some six weeks ago.
An adept over two turns, the trip of 1,820 metres is ideal and with the field not an imposing one, the four-year-old chestnut colt by Market Rally out of Miss Chestnut (Horse Chestnut) bred by Ham Stables, should make amends for his seasonal debut below par performance. He has been well-trained for the event and trainer Azan has called on the champion jockey Omar Walker to replace favourite rider Dick Cardenas.
His main danger, if there is one, will be the Spencer Chung-conditioned, The Guv. A very talented and exciting five-year-old grey horse by Royal Minister out of Havasac (Robyn Dancer) bred and owned by HSV, The Guv will himself love the two-turn trip.
But unlike Mark My Word, this will be his third outing for the season, and on each of those occasions, the son of Royal Minister has not finished worst than third with a two-and-half lengths second to Ronron ahead of Mark My Word in their March 12 clash. The Guv will be entering the contest with a 5.0kg weight advantage due to the 2.0kg claim of top claiming apprentice Richard Mairs and looks certain to make this close.
Saragossa, owned by Elias Haloute and Amber Stewart, has been installed as a lukewarm 5-2 morning line favourite in the $715,000 Easter Sprint Cup Overnight Allowance. But by coming to the grade for the first time and taking on older horses also for the first time, the speedy bay colt by Saint Appeal out of Pretty Sammy Girl (Williamstown) bred at Ham Stables Ltd, can be faced with serious challenges especially from stablemate Real Minister, who is a senior operative at this level.
Trained by Anthony Nunes, Saragossa will again be ridden by Dick Cardenas who has already won twice with the colt, while in form claiming apprentice Aaron Chatrie will ride Real Minister.
Also competent over the 1,100 dash will be seasoned campaigner Antioch, who has already won over this distance at this level and also at the higher level over the distance.
The five-year-old bay mare trained by Gresford Smith with Doushane Gordon astride has been well prepared for the event and along with Herroyalhighness, a four-year-old chestnut filly conditioned by Noel Ennevor and ridden by Paul Francis, could run well enough to turn the event in to the most competitive on the programme.
