Hoopers reign set to end
MONTEGO BAY, St James — With the preliminary rounds coming to an end this Saturday, the reign of Hoopers as Flow National Basketball League- West champions appears to have ended after just one season.
Hoopers ended their preliminary schedule with 19 points and are in joint lead with Granville Jaguars who have a game in hand against Inner-city Avalanche on Saturday.
The Douglas Reid coached Hoopers could finish third on points if Catherine Hall All-stars beat Railway Tigers in the second game as Jaguars will go past Hoopers even with a loss. Under the tournament’s rules a losing team still gains a point.
The top two teams will meet in the best-of-three finals set for May 25, May 28 and if necessary June 4.
At the other end of the table, Railway Tigers’ one year sojourn in the NBL could be over as despite being tied on 14 points with Avalanche, they will lose out on the head-to-head tie breaker, having lost two of three games to their fellow cellar dwellers.
On form, Granville Jaguars should beat Avalanche and top the standings with 21 points while Catherine Hall All-stars who are coming off a win over Granville last week should get the better of Tigers as well and return to the finals after losing to Hoopers last season.
Catherine Hall surprised the inform Granville on Wednesday with a come from behind 75-71 to keep their hopes of winning the title alive.
Granville came from two points down after the first quarter to lead by three points 36-33 at the half way mark and the teams were tied at 53-all going into the fourth quarter before Catherine Hall outscored them by four points.
Jermaine Rerrie scored 20 points to lead Catherine Hall, player/coach Kurt Dorman had 18 points while Marvin Powell got 14 points.
Huwayne Blake scored a double-double for Granville with 20 points and 10 rebounds along with seven steals while Dave Black scored 16 points.
