WINDALCO stun Waulgrovians in Super League

WINDALCO pulled of a surprise 70-54 win to end the winning streak of Waulgrovians ‘A’, 70-54, in the Berger/JNA Super Netball League at the Leila Robinson Courts on Tuesday.

It was the first defeat for the Marvette Anderson-coached Waulgrpvians aggregation who had won seven consecutive games from as many starts. WINDALCO were also avenging their heavy first-round defeat against Waulgrovians.

Meanwhile, for the Winston Nevers-coached WINDALCO from Clarendon, it was good win as it now brings a lot of interest to the remaining games in the league.

The win for WINMDALCO was also the highest margin of victory in the league so far this season.

Not to take anything away from WINDALCO’s win over Waulgrovians ‘A’, but the losers and 12-time champions can only blame themselves for such a convincing defeat after they had beaten their opponents in the first round.

Waulgrovians, however, start badly by fielding only five players as a few were not present at the scheduled start. This allowed WINDALCO to capitalise on the two-man advantage.

With Waulgrovians’ leading goal-shooter Jhaniele Fowler not present, WINDALCO got the opportunity to score some well needed goals between shooters Deneen Taylor and Anna Kay Griffiths and took a first-quarter 18-10 lead.

Waulgrovians had to play catch-up as WINDALCO kept scoring, despite shooter Fowler taking the court and in the process trying to get the team on even terms. However, WINDALCO kept them at bay to go into a half-time 33-24 ahead.

In the third quarter, Waulgrovians began playing their real game with an additional player taking the court to make it seven and also to prevent WINDALCO from running away too far with the game. WINDALCO led 50-44 at the end of the third quarter.

The many-time champions needed to outscore WINDALCO in the fourth stanza if they were to have any chance of winning, but the Clarendon-based team topped Waulgrovians 20-13 to win convincingly.

Taylor scored a game-high 44 goals from 57 attempts and teammate Griffiths, 26 goals from 32 attempts. For Waulgrovians, Fowler netted 52 from 66 attempts.

Meanwhile, defending champions Tivoli ‘A’ easily defeated Mico ‘A’, 55-24. Tivoli led from the outset, with the quarterly scores reading 14-7, 27-14, 40-19 and finally, 55-24.

Goal-shooter Cleopatra Grant scored 37 goals from 48 attempts for Tivoli, who used three other shooters in Jodi Ffrench, Sabrina Spence and Nickeisha Cohen.

Mico’s shooters Sharna Carridice scored 13 goals from 26 attempts and Patricia McCalla, 11 from 16.

Former champions JAMALCO also emerged easy 65-32 winners over UWI Revolution ‘A’. JAMALCO led all four quarters, 14-4, 34-11 and 38-20.

Elaine Davis with 39 from 44 and Marsha Murphy 21 from 27 were the leading shooters for JAMALCO, while Shawnette Kerr with 16 from 29 and Alicia Williams, 14 from 25, were UWI Revolution’s leading shooters.

Tivoli ‘A’ lead with 31 points, followed by Waulgrovians ‘A’ 30, JAMALCO 27, WINDALCO 20, UWI Revolution ‘A’ six and Mico ‘A’ five points.

The Super League continues on Saturday with Waulgrovians ‘A’ facing Mico ‘A’ and WINDALCO meeting JAMALCO.
