Cavalier hunt another play-off win
AS the first round of the JFF Premier League play-offs comes to a close this afternoon, there is still everything to play among the four teams, as only Cavalier has managed a win in four matches so far.
In today’s games Cavalier take on Highgate at the Tony Spaulding Complex at 3:30 pm, while Seba United entertain Rivoli at Jarrett Park, starting at 6:00 pm.
Last week, Seba had to twice conjure late goals to come away with their second point from their two matches — this in addition to losing the service of their Peruvian coach Danillo Barrigo, who has guided the team all season.
But the former two-time national champions are always a tough customer at home in the second city and Rivoli could definitely encounter a difficult evening.
Newly appointed coach Omar Clarke said although their form is not the best at the moment, he knows what they are capable of doing.
“We will be coming out and doing what we are supposed to do and that is to win the game. We can’t look for anything less than a win; we don’t even want to draw as that would mean a loss, so there is only one thing that we are looking at, and that’s to win,” he stated.
But the Spanish Town-based Rivoli are coming off a defeat and they are rooted at the bottom of the standings with just a point.
However, Coach Calvert Fitzgerald knows how important a win will be for his team in today’s encounter.
“It’s always tough going down to Montego Bay, but I don’t believe we have a choice now; we just have to go down there and get something from the game,” he said.
Fitzgerald noted that since there are only four games remaining, it is time for them to start winning.
“From all the games played it is obvious that the teams are of the same quality, so I’m expecting another tough game, but with a little luck I hope we can get the win this time, and I’m pretty confident we can turn it around,” he added.
The Spanish Town side will be missing this season’s top scorer, Fidel Anderson, who is out on two yellow cards, but Fitzgerald believes he has ample replacements to fill the void.
Meanwhile Cavalier, who are sitting at the summit, will be aiming to maintain that position until the end of the series, and player/coach David Laylor admits that is their
present focus.
“We will try not to make any goals score against us in the first part of the game as the Highgate team seems to be a good team,” he said.
“They went to Seba and drew, so that must be the sign of a good team and that means Highgate can spring some surprise,” he said.
“But as long as Cavalier turn up and play football we expect to get a good result… the idea is to stay on top so we can be in the Premier League next season,” he explained.
His counterpart Calvin Lewis said after two draws, his team has grown in confidence and they believe they can move into the winners’ section this weekend.
“We are focused on winning now because there are only four games left, so we need to start winning now,” he said.
“We’re going to Cavalier to hunt three points, so we intend to play good football, create our chances and defend with aggression.
“… Cavalier is an experienced team and it is their second (consecutive) time in the play-offs, but as a KSAFA coach I know a lot about Cavalier and I know we have what it takes to get three points from Cavalier,” he added.
