Jaguars on top in Flow basketball
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Granville Jaguars topped the point’s tables of the Flow National Basketball League-West as the preliminary rounds came to an end on Saturday at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
As they prepared for the start of the best-of-three finals against Catherine Hall All-stars tomorrow, Jaguars romped to a 96-69 win over relegated Inner-city Avalanche to finish with 21 points, two more than Catherine Hall and outgoing champions Hoopers.
Railway Tigers, who beat Catherine Hall 59-56, finished with 16 points to keep their place next season, while Avalanche ended with 15 points.
With two wins from their three meetings this season, Catherine Hall have the tie-breaker in head-to-head wins over Hoopers.
On Saturday, Avalanche put up a good fight for at least the first half, but had no answer to the Jaguars’ firepower, especially after centre Damion Smith fouled out midway the third quarter.
Twice in the first two quarters, Avalanche staged good come backs, but the Jaguars team led by a season-high 32 points from Dave Black, was too much in the end.
Avalanche went on a 6-0 run early to tie the game at 9-9 in he first quarter, then with three minutes 48 seconds to go in the second, Mike Haughton’s three-point shot brought them to within a point at 31-30.
Jaguars went on a tear at the start of the third quarter and were up 51-34 with just under six minutes to go, outscoring Avalanche 12-4 and ended the third quarter up by 21 points (71-50).
In addition to Black’s 32 points, Leroy Lawrence had 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots, while Huwayne Blake scored a triple double 16 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals.
Cleon Morgan scored 21 points and had nine rebounds for Avalanche, Haughton got 20 points and eight rebounds, while Fabian Julian scored 10 points.
With their backs to the wall and needing a win, Railway Tigers who were promoted this season, held on for a close win, their second win of the season over Catherine Hall.
They led by four points after the first quarter (20-16) and by three at half-time (32-29) before a big third quarter that saw them increase their lead to 12 points (53-41).
With the introduction of Goyan Malcolm at the start of the fourth quarter, Catherine Hall came back, but failed to close the gap.
Detroy Jewery was the top scorer for Tigers with 21 points and 10 rebounds, Tammy Davis scored 10 points with four rebounds and four steals, Jason Blake came off the bench to score 10 points, eight rebounds and 12 steals while Damion Williams scored eight points and had 15 rebounds.
Kurt Dorman led Catherine Hall with 14 points and 13 rebounds, Damion Henry had 14 points and Kenton Fraser scored 11 points.
