Melbourne move into sole leadership of Group D
Melbourne moved into sole leadership of Group D after coming from behind to defeat Kingston by 80 runs at Derrymore Road in round three of the 2011 National Senior Cup Championship.
Melbourne moved to 13 points, while Kingston are joint second with Kensington on nine after last weekend’s matches.
Batting first after losing the toss, Melbourne were dismantled for 116 by Kingston’s medium pacer Christopher Thomas, who took six wickets for 27 runs off 10 overs. Marvin Lobban topscored for Melbourne with 32.
Kingston then sneaked a nine-run first innings lead as left-hander Davian Johnson topscored with 21 in their 125. Left-arm orthodox spinner Christopher Lamont took three for 21 off 10 overs and five balls, while West Indies representative Nikita Miller captured three for 38 off 19.
Andre McCarthy stroked an aggressive 63 off 52 balls as Melbourne cantered to 244 for seven declared in 44 overs. The right-handed middle order batsman blasted seven boundaries and two sixes in his knock and was ably supported by Lobban, who struck 30. Thomas, Frederick Hermitt and Fabian Forbes took two wickets each.
Chasing 236 for victory on the final afternoon, Kingston started brightly and reached 111 for one before suffering a catastrophic batting collapse that saw nine wickets tumbling for 44 runs.
Lamont took four for 26, while Miller ended with four for 50. Johnson was again the main scorer for Kingston with a stroke-filled 81. The opener played particularly positively against the spinners and executed a few lofted drives off Miller, including a clean six over extra-cover, before he was bowled trying to swing the left-arm spinner through the leg side. His dismissial signalled the end of the chase for the visitors and the rest of the batsmen failed to counter Melbourne’s strong spin attack.
