MoBay wants Under-14 finals
MONTEGO BAY, St James – FRESH on the heels of Muschett High’s historic win in the ISSA/KFC girls’ all-island basketball league last weekend, the Western Basketball Association (WBA) is lobbying for the Under-14 boys’ all-island finals to be played in Montego Bay.
Deon Williams, a vice-president of the WBA and coordinator for the schools’ leagues, told the Observer West this week, that representation had been made to the Jamaica Basketball Association.
The Under-14 finals which is played on a one-day rally format is scheduled to take place in two weeks. Defending western conference champions Cornwall College, having already qualified for the Western finals, will represent the West at the national finals along with either Herbert Morrison Technical or Muschett High. Only three teams are involved in the western conference.
Currently, Herbert Morrison hold a slight edge over Muschett to advance.
The finalists will be seeking to join Muschett girls in bringing a national title to the region.
On Saturday at Manchester High, Muschett went one step further than last year when they became the first western school to win a national basketball title.
St Hughs High had beaten Muschett High in the finals last year. Herbert Morrison Technical were also losing finalists last year when they went down in the Under-19 boys section.
This season, Muschett — undefeated after winning the three-team western conference with a resounding 99-10 defeat of Herbert Morrison last week — beat Vauxhall High 39-23 in the national finals.
Muschett’s captain Loretta Gordon was also named the Most Valuable Player for the tournament.
In the first round of the national play-offs in two zones, Muschett beat STETHS and then Vauxhall in double over time to advance to the semi-finals.
In the second round, Muschett dispatched Glenmuir High 37-8 with Stacian Facey scoring eight points and Deszan McLaren seven.
In the finals, Facey scored 13 points and Gordon scored 12 to lead Muschett to their big 16-point win and the title.
