Reggae’s gone Gaga in Japan
A reggae version of Lady Gaga’s greatest hits currently tops the iTunes reggae album chart in Japan amidst the worldwide frenzy created by the release of her third studio set, Born This Way.
Entitled Reggae Gaga, the project features three sets of artistes, including Sugar Mountain Orchestra, DJ Dogboy and CJ Lewis. Universal International, a division of Universal Music LLC, released the album on May 18.
The album’s 10 tracks are Just Dance, Just Dance Reggae, Telephone, Speechless, Boys Boys Boys, Bad Romance, Paparazzi, Alejandro, and two versions of Poker Face.
Reggae Gaga is one of three albums released simultaneously in tribute to the American singer by Universal International in Japan. The other two are Jazzy Gaga, currently at number six on iTunes jazz albums chart in Japan and Disco Gaga, currently at number one on iTunes dance albums charts in Japan.
The albums were released five days prior Lady Gaga dropping Born This Way (Universal Music) which currently tops iTunes’ Top 10 album charts in 21 countries.
Explaining the reason for the tribute albums, Universal said that Gaga was its best pop icon and it wanted to honour her with versions of “proven popular songs” with “daring arrangements”.
Gaga’s popularity in the US recently spiked beyond that of talk-show host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey.
The singer, known for her eccentric outfits, came to prominence following the release of her debut studio album, The Fame (2008), which included the hits Just Dance, Poker Face, and Bad Romance and sold over 15 million copies worldwide. The album won her two Grammys as well as a slew of other awards.
“Gaga is the first artiste in history to claim four number one hits from a debut album,” her website states.
The title track from Born This Way set a music industry record by becoming the fastest single in history to reach sales of 1,000,000 copies (five days after its February 11 release) according to her website.
