Calabar’s Miller set new shot put junior record
National junior record holder Ashinia Miller of Calabar High continued his preparation for the Pan-American Junior track and field championships in Florida next month after winning the Boys Under-20 shot put late Sunday afternoon as the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Junior Trials ended at the National Stadium.
Miller, who set the NJR 19.47m on his way to winning the Under-20 gold medal at the 40th CARIFTA Games held in Montego Bay in April, threw 18.55m for the win, beating teammate and discus champion Traves Smikle (17.39m) with Munro College’s Emmanuel Oniya third with 16.72m.
St Jago’s Jeffrrey King took the Under-20 boys’ javelin with 54.57m, beating Calabar’s Ravion Ashman (52.23m) with Boys Champs gold medal winner James McDonald of Jamaica College third (51.85m).
Sanjay Pantry took the 2,000m steeplechase that was rescheduled from the first event of the day to the final, in 6:24.66, beating Calabar’s Carlton Reid (6:33.17) and Aaron Lee of Jamaica College (6:39.82).
Despite clearing just 4.00m, Kingston Colege’s Boys Champs and CARIFTA Games gold medallist Xavier Boland won the Under-20 Boys pole vault, beating Ardenne High’s Sheldon Coleman who cleared 3.70m.
