Two men die in Trelawny crash
SALT MARSH, Trelawny — Two men died yesterday morning as a result of injuries they sustained when the motorcycle on which they were travelling collided with a car along the main road here.
The deceased have been identified as 22-year-old Jermaine Shaw of Coral Gardens, and 23-year-old Romando Harris, also called ‘Rohan’ of Spot Valley– both in St James.
Reports are that yesterday about 11:30 am Shaw was driving a motorcycle — on which Harris was a pillion rider — along the Salt Marsh main road towards Falmouth, when he attempted to overtake a truck.
A section of the motorcycle reportedly touched the side of the truck, which caused the former to spin out of control and into the path of a motor car that was travelling in the opposite direction.
Both men were flung from the motorcycle and received multiple injuries all over their bodies. They died on the spot.
The driver of the motor car reportedly escaped unhurt. However, there was extensive damage to the front section of the vehicle.
Only moments after the accident, scores of onlookers gathered at the scene to view the mutilated bodies of Harris and Shaw — one resting on top of the other.
Harris’s mother Herna Harris, who was quick on the scene, had to be consoled by a friend. She recounted her last contact with her son.
“The last time I saw him was last night (Tuesday night) when he rode a bike to my home. I was going to members’ meeting and he touched me on my shoulder and went inside the house,” she recalled.
“Today when I heard he was dead I could not believe it, but when I came I saw him lying there, dead,” a distraught Harris said.
Yesterday, police Corporal Michael Swaby stopped short of blaming the accident on speeding. He made an impassioned plea to motorists to travel within the speed limit.
“Again this is an awful reminder of the scant regard that motorists continue to have for the law on the streets of Jamaica. Motorists continue to disregard speed checks, spot checks and even border-block operations to curtail and restrict their movement in the prescribed zones of the road. And if motorists continue to do that this will be the end result. Motorists, we are imploring you, please, please abide by the speed limits,” Corporal Swaby pleaded.
Yesterday’s crash came on the heels of another accident along the Providence main road in St James Monday in which two teens from St Catherine died.
They were identified as 16-year-old Anna-Kay Storage and 19-year-old Gary Anderson, both of Old Harbour addresses.
The teenagers were in a motor car heading from Montego Bay, which collided with a mini bus, owned by a funeral home. The bus was transporting a corpse at the time of the accident.
