Ricketts injured as Galaxy manage 0-0 draw with forward in goal
SANTA CLARA, California (AP) — Forward Mike Magee made four saves in goal after Los Angeles lost both of their keepers and Galaxy held on for a 0-0 draw with the San José Earthquakes in Major League Soccer on Saturday.
Magee, a nine-year veteran making his 185th MLS appearance, took over in goal after backup keeper Josh Saunders was sent off and starter Donovan Ricketts was injured.
Magee played the final 47 minutes in goal to help the MLS-leading Galaxy extend their unbeaten streak to 10 matches.
Ricketts, who had been out for three matches while playing for Jamaica in the Gold Cup, left the game with a forearm injury in the 24th minute after colliding with compatriot Khari Stephenson.
Saunders was sent off in the 43rd minute for elbowing Steven Lenhart in the face after the San José forward headed the ball out of Saunders’ arms. Lenhart received a yellow card.
Union 3, Chivas USA 2
At Chester, Pennsylvania, Danny Mwanga scored in the 82nd minute to lift Philadelphia.
Carlos Ruiz and Veljko Paunovic also scored in the second half to help the Union end a four-game winless streak and take sole possession of first place in the MLS Eastern Conference.
Michael Umana and Justin Braun scored for Chivas.
Real Salt Lake 3, Toronto FC 1
At Sandy, Utah, Alvaro Saborio found his offensive form after struggling in the Gold Cup with Costa Rica, scoring twice in Real Salt Lake’s victory over Toronto FC.
Nat Borchers also scored to help Salt Lake end a four-game winless streak.
Saborio got his first two MLS regular-season goals just a week after his missed penalties against Honduras led to Costa Rica’s elimination from the Gold Cup.
Sporting Kansas City 2, Whitecaps 1
In Kansas City, Kansas, Omar Bravo scored his first goal since mid-March to help Sporting Kansas City run their unbeaten streak to seven games.
Brazilian midfielder Camilo opened the scoring for Vancouver with a header from the middle of the area in the 15th minute, but Bravo equalised on a penalty in the 33rd.
The Mexican forward hadn’t scored since getting two goals in Sporting’s season opener.
Julio Cesar hooked the ball past keeper Joe Cannon at the edge of the box in the 40th to give the hosts all three points and deny the Whitecaps their first win in eight games outside Canada.
FC Dallas 4, Timbers 0
In Frisco, Texas, Zach Loyd and George John scored five minutes apart in the first half to help FC Dallas rout Portland.
Brek Shea and Jackson Goncalves also scored for Dallas, who have won eight of their last 12 games to move into sole possession of second place in the Western Conference.
The Timbers, playing in their first MLS season, are 0-4-1 in their last five games and 0-5-2 on the road.
Dynamo 2, DC United 2
At Washington, Brian Ching’s header in the 89th minute helped Houston salvage a draw with DC United.
Chris Pontius opened the scoring for United in the 31st minute, but Brad Davis got the equaliser on a penalty 10 minutes later.
Charlie Davies put United up again with his eighth goal of the season in the 73rd before Ching’s shot beat Bill Hamid in the closing minutes.
