Edwards teams up with Gayle for Big Bash
SYDNEY, Australia (CMC) — West Indies speedster Fidel Edwards will link up with estranged West Indies star batsman Chris Gayle after being signed by the Sydney Thunder for their Australian Big Bash Twenty20 campaign.
The deal comes just weeks after the 29-year-old Edwards returned to international cricket following a two-year break to treat a back injury that required surgery.
Edwards will form part of a formidable pace duo along with left-arm seamer Doug Bollinger who was also named as part of Sydney’s side.
“Signing Fidel Edwards and Doug Bollinger continues our policy of recruiting some of the game’s hottest talent,” said general manager John Dyson, a former West Indies coach.
“They are going to create plenty of headaches for batsmen in the KFC T20 Big Bash League.
“Fidel has proven to be a consistent wicket-taker, especially in the last series against India, while Doug is one of the premier fast bowlers in Australia and is coming off an excellent IPL series.”
In his first series back, Edwards finished as the leading wicket-taker in the three Tests against the Indians, snaring 19 wickets and bowling with pace and hostility.
The last of his 12 T20 Internationals for West Indies came during the World T20 Championship in England back in 2009.
The Big Bash bowls off in December.
