Marathon runner Bordato secures Jamaica’s second gold
SIXTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD Cecille Bordato picked up Jamaica’s second medal and second gold at the World Masters Track & Field Championships which ended yesterday in Sacramento, California.
As the lone participant in the age 65-69 women’s marathon, Bordato, who has been around the block a few times in long-distance running, completed the just over 26-mile (42 km) race in a time of five hours, three minutes, 10 seconds.
Describing the conditions as “very cold”, Bordato said she was “very happy to have done it for Jamaica”. At the 2007 World Masters in Riccione, Italy Bordato placed fifth.
The fastest woman in the masters marathon yesterday was 48-year-old Sally Gibbs of New Zealand who clocked 2:52.43 to finish 29th overall in the combined male and female field of 227 competitors. Bordato placed 215th overall.
Her gold follows that of compatriot Winston Chambers last Monday when he triumphed in the men’s 40-44-y-o 400m hurdles.
Twelve men and five women represented Jamaica at the World Masters Championships, including Maynard McIntosh, Lynsworth Headley, Benson Ford, Christopher Grant, Claudius Ramsay, Karl Smith, Norman McPherson, Michael Feurtado, Edrick Morgan and Rudolph Briscoe.
Deaneth Edwards, Doris Fraster, Rose-Marie Henry and Carmen Headley, along with Bordato were the women participating with Leo McEwan travelling as manager.
