Award-winning Jamaican ref eyes London Olympics
HAVING bagged the two main awards for the 2010-11 season, FIFA referee Kevin Morrison says his immediate plan is to officiate at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.
Last Saturday, 33-year-old Morrison was chosen FIFA Referee of the Year by the Jamaica Football Referees Association’s (JFRA’s) at the annual awards function at the Wyndham Hotel.
The award was the second major such honour for the Clarendonian, who copped the Digicel Premier League Referee of the Year plaque roughly a month ago.
In addition to the main award, Morrison was selected referee of the parish of Clarendon and was also recognised for his 10 years of unwavering support and service to the JFRA and football.
A FIFA referee since 2008, Morrison, told the Observer that his short-term goal is the next Olympics.
“This augurs well for me as a referee when you can get these awards in your country. Because the way how CFU (Caribbean Football Union), CONCACAF and FIFA work is how you perform in your country. Every time you do a game your rankings or scores are submitted, so they have an idea how the FIFA referees are doing in their country. So it is a good thing and this only can motivate you to go further,” he said.
“My objective now is to move out of the CFU. I think I have done enough games in the Caribbean… my main aim now is London Olympics 2012. Your dream as a referee is to officiate in a World Cup, but I’m not gonna say its 2014 or 2018.”
He admitted that he was pleasantly surprised at being named as the country’s FIFA Referee of the Year.
“I’m gonna be honest that I am a bit surprised at one of the awards, and that’s the top FIFA referee award… this has something to do with your performance outside of your country and for me to receive that award ahead of other referees like Courtney Campbell, it means you must be doing well,” said Morrison.
He also praised the JFRA for granting him the opportunity and also the state-owned Institute of Sports, where he’s employed as a sport officer for Clarendon.
“I would like to thank my referee colleagues and the supporting team headed by Dave Miekle, Rohan Thorbourne and Victor Stewart who have played a vital role in my achievements,” he said.
