Cocktails with – Carrie ‘Quizz’ Sigurdson
It’s another hectic day in the life of Carrie ‘Quizz’ Sigurdson, managing director of The Queue Limited — the company that handles Whaddat.com and Productions, Scribbles Baby W?ear and Quizzart Graphics. We’re delighted the writer, painter and YUSH promoter, though in-between several meetings, was able to pause for a bit of banter and drinks at TGIFriday’s.
What are you sipping today?
The Ultimate June Bug. It’s TGIFridays’ signature drink that I absolutely love. It’s a mixture of pineapple juice, sour mix, coconut rum and midori.
What kind of day are you having?
A very busy day. Every day is a very busy day for me but never bad. If it’s going badly, I urge it in the opposite direction, but today is particularly busy and particularly good!
What’s your ideal relaxation spot?
My new home office. The walls are chocolate brown and the air conditioner is kicking! It’s very relaxing and the perfect environment for getting things done.
What’s your latest obsession?
Coffee Patrón.
Socialite or homebody?
Quizz is definitely a socialite but Carrie is the quintessential homebody, if that makes any sense.
Why are you called Quizz?
Well, I used to be a rapper (laughs), and one day I was in the studio doing my thing and Thriller U from the group LUST heard me and asked what my name was and somebody responded that I didn’t have one. So he asked where I was from, and in explaining that I was born to Canadian parents in Iran, he found me mysterious almost, and he said I was like a quiz, hence the name.
What was the first event you did?
Wow. Well, I used to throw slumber parties in preparatory school and house parties in high school every chance I got, but my first real event was a party called “Manic Mondays” at Grasshoppers.
What’s the most interesting thing about putting on events (for you)?
Definitely the marketing. From conceptualising the theme to designing the flyer, to producing the ads, guerrilla marketing and pre-event interviews. Bringing forth an event’s personality is my forte.
Other than your own events, what’s the best party you’ve ever been to?
I’ve been to hundreds of parties so that’s tough to answer, but the first one that comes to mind is A-List, last weekend in Ocho Rios. Food, drinks, venue, music… everything was on point. But best party of all time? Blink, July 18, 2004. Yes, I even remember the date.
What do you think the greatest difference is between parties today and when you just started?
That’s easy. The Noise Abatement Act of 1997.
Flats or stilettos?
Stilettos! It’s hard to find flats that will pull off a great dress. I’ll bear the pain if the shoe is sexy enough.
Jeans or LBD?
I’m more comfortable in jeans and Air Force Ones, but I love dressing up!
What turns you off?
Hypocritical behaviour, on any level.
In a sentence, who is Quizz?
Quizz is easy to understand but difficult to figure out.
What’s your style?
Strictly “Quizzical” but if I had to describe it, it would be skater punk meets Hollywood.
What’s in your handbag?
BlackBerry, wallet, Moleskine daily planner, my cap, paint chips and camcorder.
What perfume are you spraying?
“I got the Johnson’s baby powder and Cool Water cologne” (laughs). Oh, and Gucci Rush.
What’s your idea of the perfect man?
Not too bad, not too good.
What’s your idea of the perfect date?
Sushi and poker.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Bad writing.
Who does your hair?
Roxanne on a Wednesday, Peter Barett on a weekend and L’Oréal on any other given day.
Who does your nails?
Me, me or me but I go to The Face Place sometimes to get a real mani-pedi (and a spray tan… shh).
When you’re not working, where’s the best place to find you?
In my room, taking a nap.
What’s in your car stereo/on your iPod?
Lil Wayne, Maroon 5, Al Green, Bounty Killer, Kenny Rogers, NWA, The Beatles, Chris Brown, Tessanne. Everything. My boyfriend complains when I select “Shuffle All Songs” in the car.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
“Give it to the Universe.”
What do you feel is your best character trait?
Supersincerity.
And your worst?
Supersincerity.
Who or what inspires you?
My inspiration is borne from people’s cravings and voids that need filling. Also, aiming to live up to the great expectations of my family, friends and peers is the greatest. I like to set a sky-high standard for myself.
What projects are you currently working on?
We don’t have much room left. But mainly two things: Scribbles (hand-dyed baby clothes) and What Time is it? (a real-life show soon to be aired on LIME TV).
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Kicking back and ‘tekkin’ it easy with a smile on my face. Reaping the harvest of my life’s hard work.
