Sir Von fancied for GG Stakes

AN unusual number of trophy races will punctuate the Heroes Day Holiday 10-race card sponsored by Hi-Pro Farm and Gardens Centre at Caymanas Park today highlighted by the 52nd running of the $1,320,000 Governor General Stakes (Gr 1) feature over 2,000 metres. First post at 12:35 pm.

In this test of stamina run, the winner can emerge from any of the three imported runners in Sir Von, Priceless Beauty, Raise A Ruckus along the Jamaica Derby winner Technomoto.

On current form all three overseas-bred horses are in with a glorious chance of taking the event with a slight edge going to Sir Von. He over the distance recently when be put away the reigning Horse-of-the-Year Mark My Word by 2 1/2 lengths with a solid front-running display. A bay colt by Even The Score out of Premier Gray (Premiership) bred by Judy B Clemow, Sir Von, the mount of Shane Ellis, has staying qualities on both sides. He has already accounted for Priceless Beauty with Omar Walker aboard and should prove a little better than the inform Raise A Ruckus, whose 51.0kg could serve him in good stead against the 57.0kg toting Sir Von.

Also sharing top billing on the card is the Hi-Pro ‘Stables Choice’ Feeds Trophy, maiden special weight contest for native-bred two-year-olds over 1,300 metres to go off at approximately 3:00 pm.

Unlike the Graded Stakes principal feature event where only a field of eight will run, the juveniles have turned out in sufficient numbers to double that figure and propose to be just as competitive.

The race in itself can be significant as it will give trainers a further look to unearth undeveloped talents among this crop of native-bred animals and from here go on to give good accounts of themselves in the remaining two legs of the SVL Triple Crown Series.

Lady Kanchan is one such prospect who could just be eyeing an entry, especially now that the distances for the remaining two races in the SVL series are 1,400 and 1,600 metres, respectively.

Own by Bombay Studs Farm and trained by Morris Powell, a chestnut filly out of Good As Gold (Fountain Of Gold) and bred Henry W Jaghai, Lady Kanchan has worked pretty well coming into this event and it now remains to be seen whether or not she has it in her to go on from here after this with a good performance. The chestnut daughter of War Marshall gave encouraging signs on debut under today’s rider Richard Micthell when she finished a good second to Exotic Gold over 1,200 metres.

Raging Prospect, who is bred along sprinting lines on the dam side is one with as a good a chance as any to open her winning account the second time of asking. She was a mere half-a-length in arrears of winner Aquamoto on their debut and looks better prepared for this. A chestnut colt by He’stherealthing out of Raging Fury (Al’s River Cat) bred at Orange Valley Estate, Raging Prospect, own by Hayden C Thomas and Fitzroy Glispie, who is also a part owner, looks determined to shed his maiden tag this time around as trainer Glispie has called for the services of the champion rider Omar Walker to partner him.

Truly Explosive, a bay colt by Dayton Flyer out of Explosive Witt (Schism) and bred by Marcus Dabdoub, who is another Morris Powell entrant, has also done enough at exercise to merit consideration along with I’m Allwright, trained by Anthony Nunes and ridden by Dick Cardenas.
