Findlay only local in main draw of ITF tourney
ROSE HALL, St James — Montego Bay’s Shaddae Findlay who gained a wild card entry will be the only Jamaican in the main draw today as the first of four ITF Women’s tournaments gets underway at the Hilton Rose Hall at 9:30 am.
Findlay will face American Brittany Augustine, who is ranked 840th in the world, with the winners going on to face the winner of the first round encounter between Brazil’s Raquel Piltcher and number seven-ranked Simone Khabibulina of Belarus.
Findlay and Shellita Haughton and Shaddae Findley are down to take part in the doubles as well and will play the team of Frederica Grazioso of Italy and Eduarda Piai of Brazil.
Ffion Fletcher, one of four Jamaicans hoping to gain world ranking points over the next month, was beaten in straight sets by Canada’s Monica Neveklovska 6-3, 6-1in the final round of qualifying on Sunday.
Pauline Hylton, a product of the SOS Village tennis programme was beaten in straight sets 6-0 6-1 in Saturday’s rained-affected start of the qualifying by the Russian Maria Tcakanian.
Slovakia’s Zuzana Zlochova, who is ranked at number 410 in the world, is the top seed and will face Great Britain’s Laura Deigman.
The Czech Republic’s Katerina Kramperova is the second seed, her compatriot Simona Dobra is number three, while American Elizabeth Ferris is the fourth seed.
The event will run until Saturday when the final will be played.
